Kozhikode: American Oncology Institute (AOI) at BMH, Calicut gave a new lease of life to a young 33-year-old patient suffering from type II diabetes and rectum cancer. The entire treatment schedule was performed with extreme precision under the guidance of a team of Senior Oncologists. (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and at American Oncology Institute and Surgical Oncology at BMH). The radiation oncology team consisted of Dr.P.R.Sasindran, MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI and Dr. Dhanya K.S., MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI.
Rajesh Nair (name changed) was suffering from advanced growth in the rectum with a medical history of type II diabetes. After a thorough evaluation and investigation, the patient was advised to undergo radiation and chemotherapy followed by Sphincter Preservation Surgery. Due to the critical location of tumour, it was crucial to preserve the continuity of the bowel and the function of the anal sphincter.
This surgery is challenging in male patients, due to the complicated position of the rectum and narrow pelvis. Important nerves are present in this area and any injury might have a lasting impact on the patient’s life. Due to the aggressive nature of disease and young age of the patient, concurrent chemo radiation therapy was given for a considerable reduction in the size of tumour. The patient is now on regular follow-ups and successfully runs a clinic in Malappuram, Kerala.
Mr. Faisal Siddiqui, Assistant Vice President – Strategy and Operations, CTSI, South Asia, said, ” At AOI, we discuss patient care at local and international tumour boards on a weekly basis to ensure that best in class treatment protocols are followed in each case. Phenomenal advances in diagnostic and therapeutic capability have made organ conservation possible in sphincter preservation in rectal cancers and many more. American Oncology Institute (AOI) is committed to offering best-in-class clinical expertise, technological superiority, and passionate care for our patients in South Asia. With state-of-the-art technology and quality services, we aim to provide accessibility for patients in Kozhikode to avoid long-distance travel to metro cities.”
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr. Dhanya K.S., MD, Radiation Oncology, AOI said, “In India, the annual incidence rates (AARs) for colon and rectal cancer in men are 4.4 and 4.1 per 1,00,000. The rectum is the chamber that begins at the end of the large intestine and ends at the anus. Regular rectal cancer screening is one of the most powerful tools for early detection and prevention. Multidisciplinary teamwork will provide the best treatment outcome. AOI -BMH had a multi-disciplinary care program backed by the latest technology, centralized radiation treatment planning, and international standard cancer treatment protocols. We ensure a holistic precision cancer care approach for the patients’ well-being.”
