Agartala: The Tripura Congress on Wednesday suspended its working president Bilal Miya amid speculation that he might switch sides and join the ruling BJP. Talking about this, a Congress leader said that Miya has been expelled because of his anti-party activities.
Prior to his eviction, senior Tripura ministers Ratan Lal Nath and Sushant Chowdhary met him at his residence in Sonamura’s Sipahijala district. Tripura Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha confirmed this and said that Miya has been thrown out for six years.
A press release issued on Wednesday signed by Saha said, “Former minister Bilal Miya is expelled from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress for a period of six years with immediate effect for his anti-party activities.” The expelled Congress leader wrote a letter to the party’s National President Mallikarjun Kharge, in which he wrote, ‘Indian National Congress was my home for the last 44 years and during this period, I have served the party in various capacities. At present I am the working president of TPCC. With immediate effect, I resign from the primary membership as well as all party posts in the Congress.
According to reports, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha expelled Miya, who was the party’s face before minority voters in Sonamura subdivision, where bypolls to two assembly constituencies are due on September 5 this year. He has also worked as a Minister of State in the past.
