There has been a demand for reform in the United Nations Security Council for a long time. Now strategy making regarding this has also started. On September 21, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan was held. In this meeting it was agreed that there is a need for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council so that it can better reflect contemporary geopolitical systems.
Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and India’s Deputy Minister of External Affairs Sanjay Verma participated in this meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. It was said in the meeting that due to complex crises, there is a lot of pressure on multilateralism. It was said in the meeting that the United Nations is proving incapable of effectively and timely solving global problems, hence there is a need for reform. The joint press statement issued after the meeting said that there is a need for expansion in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of the UN Security Council. Which will help in making it more effective, valid and efficient. The countries participating in the meeting appealed to the United Nations to move forward on this important issue.
India in its statement at the Summit of the Future summit said that under India’s chairmanship, the concerns of the Global South were placed on the G20 agenda. The summit held in Delhi covered five major chapters, which include international peace and security, adherence to international laws. India’s statement also said that the multilateral system has been affected due to the Corona epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Adoption of double standards to combat climate change and terrorism has been criticized.
