Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Tosha Khana case. Along with this, Imran Khan was banned from contesting elections for 10 years. A fine of 787 million (Pakistan Rupees) has also been imposed.
The Tosha Khana department stores the valuable gifts given by foreign heads of states, governments and international dignitaries to rulers, legislators, government officials, military officers and other officials of Pakistan. The case in Imran’s name is that he sold the expensive gifts he received while he was the prime minister and made money on his own. A case was filed against Imran in August 2022 by a politician named Muhsin Shahnawaz Ranja and others in the government of Pakistan. The controversy started in 2018 when a journalist filed an application under Pakistan’s Freedom of Information Act to disclose details of gifts received by Imran Khan during his tenure.
Imran Khan and Pakistan’s former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were sentenced to ten years in prison by a special court under the Official Secrets Act for leaking information related to national security. This is followed by the verdict in the Toshakhana case.
The case is that the information in the diplomatic document sent to the Pakistan Embassy in Washington was disclosed in the party rally held in March 2022. Imran Khan and Qureshi were arrested in August last year. The trial was completed in jail.
