According to the report, OpenAI’s AI tool ChatGPT is consuming 5 lakh kilowatts of electricity every hour. If averaged out, ChatGPT is consuming 17 thousand times more electricity than American homes every day. This consumption is happening on the applications of 20 crore users. If this figure increases, then electricity consumption will also automatically increase. Data scientist Alex de Vries said that Google includes generative AI in every search. Vrij said it could consume about 29 billion kilowatt hours a year, which would exceed the annual electricity consumption of countries such as Kenya, Guatemala and Croatia.
