Mysuru: India has successfully completed the first trial run of an indigenously developed 1500 horsepower engine for battle tanks. Today (20-03-2024) Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane presided over the test function held at Engine Division of BEML, Mysore Complex. The function was attended by senior civil and military officials of the Ministry of Defence, industry partners and officials of BEML Limited.
The India-made 1500 HP engine has state-of-the-art features such as high power-to-weight ratio, excellent performance at high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures and deserts. The engine is equipped with advanced technologies and is among the best globally.
Inaugurating the test cell, the defense secretary said that this transformation will enhance the capabilities of the armed forces. BEML CMD Shantanu Roy said that this is an important step of BEML which will contribute significantly to the defense excellence of the country.
The first generation was completed with the successful first test of the 1500 HP engine. In the second generation, BEML will build engines for various experiments and integrate them with real vehicles. The project is targeted to be completed by mid-2025. The project started in August 2020 and has reached five major stages so far.
