New Delhi: Former Lok Sabha Speaker and Congress leader Meera Kumar is not contesting the Lok Sabha elections. She said this on her social media. Jagjivan Ram’s daughter and five-time MP said on Facebook that she will continue to do women empowerment and social work like before. She posted on her Facebook account, “I have decided not to contest in the 2024 general elections. I will always serve the people of my country, especially the poor, deprived sections and women.”
Meera has been MP from Sasaram seat of Bihar five times. When UPA was in power at the Centre, she was made the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in 2009. She is the first woman speaker in the history of Indian politics. It is noteworthy that Mrs. Meera Kumar has represented Sasaram parliamentary constituency of Bihar twice. She had won the2004 and 2009Lok Sabha elections from Sasaram. She became a Union Minister in 2004 and the country’s first woman Lok Sabha Speaker in 2009, but in 2014 and 2019 she lost to BJP candidate Chhedi Paswan in Sasaram. Her father Jagjivan Ram was MP from Sasaram Lok Sabha for eight consecutive terms from the first election in 1952 to 1986.
According to election pundits, it is believed that Meera was not happy with the seat sharing formula within ‘India’. That is why it is believed that she has distanced herself from the election fight. However, it is not yet known why Meera withdrew from the election contest.
