Gwalior: Gwalior parliamentary seat of Madhya Pradesh is identified as the fort of the Scindia royal family. In this election, Congress and BJP have fielded those candidates who had lost in the recently held assembly elections. BJP has made Bharat Singh Kushwaha its candidate from Gwalior. Kushwaha had lost from Gwalior Rural in the recently held assembly elections. At the same time, Congress has placed its bet on Praveen Pathak, who was defeated from Gwalior South in the assembly elections. Both the candidates are contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the first time.
If we look at the history of Gwalior parliamentary constituency, a total of 19 Lok Sabha elections have been held so far in which members of the Scindia family have won eight times. Former Union Railway Minister Madhavrao Scindia was elected from here five times as a Congress and Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress candidate, while Yashodhara Raje Scindia was elected from here twice as a BJP candidate. Apart from this, Vijayaraje Scindia has also won the election once. In the 19 elections held here, Congress has been victorious eight times.
Congress last won the Gwalior parliamentary constituency in 2004 when Ramsevak Singh was elected. He had to resign on charges of taking money in exchange for asking questions.
