Nagpur: Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati has given a big message by launching the election campaign from Nagpur. Mayawati’s first public meeting for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 was in Bejanbagh of Indora, Nagpur. After Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra is the only state where BSP has had its support base at some point of time. However, in recent times, BSP seems to be lagging behind in electoral politics.
In this election, on the lines of 2014, Mayawati has decided to contest alone. In such a situation, questions are being raised that why did Mayawati leave Uttar Pradesh from where she has been the CM many times and choose Nagpur?
Nagpur has been a major venue for Dalit politics in India. On 14 October 1956, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar along with his 3 lakh 65 thousand supporters accepted Buddhism at Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur. Through this, he wrote many books and articles and talked about equality for Dalits. Following the principles of Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram had taken BSP to every village of the country. Dalit vote bank has been the base for Mayawati and BSP. However, with time, BJP has made a big dent in that vote bank. In such a situation, questions are being raised whether this is an attempt to win over the Dalit vote bank which is moving away from itself?
