New Delhi: Avani Lekhara, India’s celebrated Paralympic shooter, has once again showcased her extraordinary talent by defending her gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Women’s SH1 final at the Paralympic Games 2024. Having first gained prominence at the Tokyo Paralympics, Avani clinched the top position once more in Paris. Her impressive performance was complemented by her fellow Indian shooter Mona Agarwal, who secured the bronze medal, thus adding another accolade to India’s tally.
Avani Lekhara from Jaipur, Rajasthan, is an inspiring example of strength and determination. In 2012, a bad car accident left her wheelchair-bound, but her father helped her get better through sports. Her father suggested sports to help her body and mind heal and Avani started archery – a sport that needs great skill and attention.
Avani is inspired by Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra, she transitioned to competitive shooting in 2015. Her exceptional skill and dedication quickly brought her success on both national and international stages. Avani made history by setting world records at junior and senior levels, marking her as a formidable competitor in para shooting.
Avani’s ambitions extend beyond the shooting range. Despite a rigorous training schedule, she has remained committed to her academic goals. She is enrolled in a five-year law degree program at the University of Rajasthan, balancing her academic responsibilities with her athletic career. Her academic achievements reflect her multifaceted talents and unwavering commitment to excellence in all areas of her life.
The pinnacle of Avani Lekhara’s sporting career came in 2021 at the Paralympic Games, where she became the first Indian female Paralympian to win two medals, gold and bronze in a single event.
