Manipur: Security alert after over 900 Kuki militants cross into India from Myanmar

Manipur:  In a concerning development, security agencies in Manipur have been placed on high alert following reports that over 900 trained Kuki militants have entered the state from Myanmar. This information was disclosed during a strategic meeting led by the security advisor to the Manipur government, attended by high-ranking officials from the Army, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, State Police, and Central Reserve Police Force.

Recent intelligence inputs received by Manipur Police indicated that these militants, skilled in operating drone-based explosives and missiles, have infiltrated the region in groups of around 30. Authorities fear that these militants may coordinate attacks on Meitei villages as early as September 28.

On September 16, intelligence reports highlighted the militants’ entry, prompting the Chief Minister’s Office to communicate the details to the Director General of Police, Security Advisor, and Home Commissioner. Following this, a crucial meeting was convened by Kuldeep Singh, Security Advisor to the Manipur Government, on September 18. During this meeting, key security officials reviewed the situation and discussed intelligence strategies.

Kuldeep Singh stated, “We have shared the inputs with top officials from various agencies, including intelligence, to prepare for potential scenarios. The state has directed agencies to expedite their investigations and informed district officials in Churachandpur, Pherzawal, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, and Ukhrul to remain vigilant.” He emphasized, “Until proven otherwise, we are treating this information as 100% accurate.”

The emergence of this intel has fostered an atmosphere of tension in the Meitei-dominated valley, raising public concerns.

The situation escalated following renewed violence in the state on September 1, where drones were reportedly employed to drop bombs in the Kautruk and Senjam Chirang foothills, while long-range rockets targeted villages in the Bishnupur district, resulting in 11 fatalities.

In response to these incidents, students in the valley regions, particularly in Thoubal and Imphal, staged significant protests. Demonstrators voiced slogans such as “Manipur Amar Rahe,” “Incompetent MLAs Resign,” and “Give Unified Command to the State Government.” The protests turned violent, with clashes between police and demonstrators in Thoubal leading to at least 20 injuries, including among law enforcement. Police deployed tear gas and stun grenades, prompting protesters to retaliate with stones.
