Israeli army has shared a video showing what they claim to be a Hezbollah tunnel in southern Lebanon, highlighting stark differences between these tunnels and those used by Hamas in Gaza. The footage, which lacks details on when and where it was filmed, comes amidst ongoing skirmishes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah along the Lebanese border, following the outbreak of war in Gaza after Hamas attacked Israeli cities on October 7 last year.
In the one-minute video, Israeli soldiers demonstrate the tunnel’s features, revealing a 100-meter-long structure equipped with iron doors, AK-47 rifles, a bedroom, bathroom facilities, generators, water tanks, and even two-wheelers. These tunnels are described as much more sophisticated than those built by Hamas in Gaza, suggesting a higher level of preparation and longevity for the occupants.
An Israeli soldier narrates in the clip, “We are crossing the border into southern Lebanon to investigate what Hezbollah is constructing under civilian homes. They seem to be preparing for an attack similar to what happened on October 7.” The soldier continues, “These are not the kind of tunnels we saw in Gaza,” referring to Hezbollah’s elite Radwan units, who, according to Israeli intelligence, are readying for possible assaults on northern Israel.
The Israeli military claims to have discovered several tunnels built under civilian homes since launching ground operations into Lebanon late last month. One tunnel reportedly spanned 25 meters and extended into Israeli territory. The discovery of these tunnels has further fueled tensions along the volatile border.
In an operation on Tuesday, Israeli troops reportedly captured three Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. The military statement described an underground shaft inside a building where the Radwan Force members were hiding. “They were found with a large cache of weapons and survival equipment,” the statement added.
This is not the first incident involving underground tunnels in the current conflict. Last Sunday, the Israeli military captured another Hezbollah fighter from a tunnel in southern Lebanon, reinforcing concerns about the group’s preparedness for prolonged conflict.
