Maharashtra: Congress announces third candidate list, finalizes 87 candidates as assembly elections approach

On Saturday, the Congress party announced its third list of 16 candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, bringing the total to 87 candidates across three lists. Previously, the party released a first list with 48 candidates, followed by a second list featuring 23 candidates. This strategic move comes as the elections draw closer, set for November 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising Congress, the Shiv Sena (UBT), and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), has finalized its seat-sharing arrangement for 255 constituencies. Each party is allocated 85 seats, while the distribution of the remaining 23 seats will hinge on the candidate lists submitted by each faction. The urgency of these discussions is palpable, as both the MVA and the Mahayuti alliance intensify negotiations to finalize their agreements.

Despite the coalition’s efforts, the Samajwadi Party (SP), a key ally of Congress within the INDIA bloc, has voiced its dissatisfaction. SP leader Abu Azmi expressed concerns over a lack of communication regarding seat allocations. “We spoke to Sharad Pawar yesterday. He indicated that a decision would be made today, but I have not received any communication. The seats I requested are being announced. I fear we may face betrayal as in the previous two terms,” he stated. He further warned that if their concerns go unaddressed, they might have to contest independently. As the clock ticks down to the elections, the future of the MVA and the dynamics of Maharashtra politics remain uncertain.
