CHENNAI: The Central government is attempting to abolish the Waqf Board through the introduction of an Amendment Bill, declared Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad. The Grand Mufti made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at a public meeting organized by the Tamil Nadu Muslim Jamaat State Committee.
The proposed legislation contains more than 40 amendments that will reportedly undermine the Islamic concept of Waqf and its objectives. “It is questionable to bring amendments that will sabotage the objectives and purposes of Waqf and freeze the functioning of the Waqf Board,” Musliyar stated. He called upon the Central government to initiate discussions with Muslim scholars and organizations and consider their demands.
Tamil Nadu Chief Qazi Dr Salahuddin Mohammed Ayyub led the prayer at the event. The function was presided over by Tamil Nadu Muslim Jamaat State President Syed Abdur Rahman Thangal Baqavi Ahsani, while State Jamiatul Ulama Vice President Dr. A. Mueenuddin Jamali performed the inauguration. Tamil Nadu Minority Affairs Minister S. M. Nassar attended as the chief guest, and Sayyed Samadani Mian Ashrafi Lucknow delivered an address in Urdu.
The gathering was also attended by prominent religious scholars including Mansoor Haji, Abdul Hakeem Imdadi, Muhammad Salim Siraji, Tajuddin Ahsani, Mustafa Maslahi, and Musa Sakhafi Pathiramanna.
