In an inspiring turn of events, Tripti Dimri has emerged as the most popular Indian movie star for 2024, surpassing major Bollywood icons like Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Prabhas. The 29-year-old actress, known for her roles in Animal, Laila Majnu, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, has claimed the top spot on IMDb’s list of top ten stars, outshining some of the biggest names in the Indian film industry.
Joining Dimri in the top ranks is another 29-year-old, Ishan Khatter, who secured the third spot. Khatter has gained international recognition with his role in the Netflix series The Perfect Couple, starring alongside Nicole Kidman. His career began with the critically acclaimed Beyond the Clouds (2017) and continued to rise with the successful A Suitable Boy (2020).
Sharvari, known for her performances in Munjya, Maharaj, and Vedaa this year, also made it to the top ten, adding a youthful touch to the list that includes both emerging talents and established stars. The diverse list reflects how entertainment and stardom in India have become increasingly pan-Indian, with rising stars from various regions gaining recognition across the country.
IMDb’s rankings, which have been in place since 2017, are based on page views from more than 250 million monthly visitors worldwide. The stars who have consistently ranked high in IMDb’s weekly rankings throughout 2024 make it to the top ten. As a subsidiary of Amazon since 1998, IMDb is a global authority on movies, TV shows, and celebrities. IMDbPro, its paid service, is widely used by studios, agents, and actors worldwide.
The rankings from previous years, including 2023 and 2022, indicate that an actor’s popularity is often linked to their number of releases and media presence. For example, Sobhita Dhulipala, who ranked fifth, made headlines with her Hollywood debut in Monkey Man, her role in the upcoming Kalki 2898 AD, and her engagement to actor Naga Chaitanya Akkineni. In contrast, stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who had fewer releases, continue to maintain a strong presence in the rankings due to their enduring popularity.
Shah Rukh Khan, coming off the success of Pathaan, Jawaan, and Dunki, topped the IMDb list in 2023, while in 2022, Dhanush led the rankings following his success with Thiruchitrambalam and his role in The Gray Man alongside Ryan Gosling. The difference in rankings between the past two years and 2024 highlights the evolving nature of stardom in India.
