Imphal: Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on the situation in Manipur on Saturday. During this, Shah has given instructions to take strict action against those blocking the roads. The Home Minister has asked to ensure unhindered movement on all roads in Manipur from March 8.
After the violence that has been going on since May 2023, people of the Meitei and Kuki communities have barricaded the roads in their respective areas. Its purpose is to prevent people of other communities from coming to their area. The Home Minister has ordered to end such blockage.
This was the first review meeting after the imposition of President’s rule in the state. Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned on February 9. After this, President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13. The meeting was attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, top officials of the Manipur government, army and paramilitary forces.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended the deadline for militants to surrender their arms till 4 pm on March 6. Over 300 weapons have been surrendered since February 20. This includes 246 weapons surrendered by the Meitei group Arambai Tengol. On February 20, Bhalla had requested people of all communities, especially those living in the valleys and hills, to surrender the looted weapons and ammunition at the nearest police stations, outposts or security force camps.
