New Delhi: Speculations of a re-alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the AIADMK are rife. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Tamil Nadu later this month. Shah’s visit has been planned as a strategy ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections and the 2026 West Bengal elections. There is a possibility that the Home Minister may meet senior AIADMK leaders. After AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami met Shah in Delhi in March, there is speculation that the two old allies may re-alliance ahead of the assembly elections and form a strong front against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
A source in the media report said that he also met Sangh ideologue S Gurumurthy and some party workers, but there was no comment on whether talks were being held with AIADMK leaders. Pressure on central leadership Some state leaders have put pressure on the central leadership to re-align with the AIADMK, which will give the party a chance to increase its hold in the state and take advantage of the anti-DMK sentiment.
A party worker said that there have been several talks between the leaders of the two parties regarding the possibility of an alliance. It is expected that an announcement may be made soon after the organizational reshuffle in the state. Eyes on the election of the new state president After Annamalai’s resignation from the post of state president, all eyes are on who the party will choose as his successor as the alliance will depend on how the state leaders coordinate among themselves. The contradictory stance between Annamalai and the AIADMK was a major reason for the break-up of the alliance. The new state president may be announced soon.
Possibilities of alliance Many leaders of BJP and AIADMK say that the alliance of the two parties can be more successful in ousting the DMK from power in the state. The AIADMK had announced its exit from the NDA in 2023 after differences cropped up between the two alliance partners over comments made by Annamalai.
In the 2021 elections, the DMK formed the government by winning 133 of the 234 seats, while the AIADMK’s tally dropped from 136 to 66 seats. The BJP won four seats and the PMK won five seats. Shah’s Bihar and West Bengal tour is scheduled to be part of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit to Bihar. A state leader said that during his last visit in March, Shah met workers in the state and inquired about the party’s situation. During the two-day visit, the minister will give guidelines for the election strategy.
A visit to West Bengal will also be announced soon, which aims to empower party workers and decide the strategy for the upcoming election campaign. Shah’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir is starting from April 6. He will stay here for three days, where he will review the security situation and inaugurate development projects. Apart from this, he will meet party MLAs in Jammu and discuss party organizational issues. This visit of Amit Shah is part of BJP’s strategic preparations, which will decide the direction of the party for the upcoming elections.
