States cannot stop implementation of law: Kiren Rijiju attacks Mamata Banerjee

Mumbai: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for refusing to implement the Waqf Amendment Act and said under the federal structure no state can stop the implementation of a law passed by Parliament.

Rijiju said that some misguided Muslims and politicians engaged in vote bank appeasement are opposing the Waqf Amendment Act. He said that the government will soon expose such people. He made these comments during a press conference in Mumbai.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier said that the Waqf Act will not be implemented in Bengal and she will protect minorities and their properties. Reacting to Banerjee’s remarks, the Minister of Minority Affairs said, “We work under a federal structure. She can oppose the Act in principle, but cannot say that she will not implement the law passed by Parliament in the state.
