Washington: US surgeons successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a brain dead patient. This experiment has ended after 61 days. US surgeons announced Thursday that they have performed the longest kidney transplant ever performed.
According to reports, scientists believe that such experiments will promote organ transplants from animals to humans. This surgery has been done at New York University Langone Transplant Institute. University Director Robert Montgomery said, “For the last two months, since the surgery took place, we have studied a lot and analyzed everything. During this time we learned a lot. This is hope for our future.” Let us tell you that more than 103,000 people in the United States want to get an organ transplant, out of which 88,000 need a kidney. This was the fifth xenotransplant done by Montgomery,
The donor pig came from a herd raised by Virginia-based biotech company Revivicor. These pigs are bred, not cloned, which means the process can be more easily scaled up. In January 2022, surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical School performed the world’s first pig kidney-to-human transplant on a living patient. However the man died after two months. Let us tell you that the science field in the world is progressing so fast that things which seemed impossible have now become possible.
