Bus carrying 40 students crashes in New York, two killed and many injured

New York: Two people died and many students were injured in a bus accident in Orange County, New York.  CNN quoted New York Governor Kathy Hochul as saying that the bus carrying students fell into a 50-foot deep gorge in New Orange County.

Kathy Hochul said authorities responded to the crash around 1:12 a.m. local time Thursday afternoon. She said that first of all, with the help of rescue workers, the students were taken out of the bus and admitted to the hospital. She said that the city is mourning the loss of lives in this tragic accident.

Hochul said that at the time of the accident, imagine the fear, screams and the subsequent scene when these high school students were surrounded by troubles. “With the help of first responders, the students were rescued from the bus within 45 minutes and taken to a safe place,” the governor said.

According to reports, New York Police Lieutenant Colonel Richard L. Mazzone told the media that a commercial bus was carrying 40 students and four adults from Farmingdale High School. Mazzone said several students suffered serious injuries, five of whom were in critical condition. He said that the injured have been admitted to different hospitals.

Mazzone said the initial investigation indicated the crash may have been caused by a front tire failure on the bus. He said that further investigation is going on. Farmingdale High School spokesman Jake Mendlinger said the bus was headed to Greeley, Pennsylvania, for band camp. The bus was one of six headed to a band camp event in Pennsylvania.
