Delhi: India protested over the chanting of pro-Khalistan slogans at a function attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested by summoning the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner on the issue. India criticized this as evidence of giving opportunity to separatism, extremism and violence in Canada. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs pointed out that continuing such a position would affect the mutual relations between the two countries and lead to escalation of violence in Canada.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that separatism and violence are being given political space in Canada. The pro-Khalistan slogan was raised in an event held in connection with the Khalsa Day, which is celebrated as part of the formation of the Sikh community. Khalistan Zindabad slogans kept ringing as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who attended the ceremony, took to the stage to deliver his speech.
The slogan was raised even while opposition leader Pierre Poilever was speaking. Earlier, Trudeau stated that he will always protect the freedom and rights of Sikhs in Canada and protect the Sikh community from discrimination and hatred. Thousands of people participated in the event held in Toronto, Canada.
