New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh recently raised concerns over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) handling of the results during the Haryana Assembly Elections, alleging delays in the data updates. In response, the ECI provided a detailed minute-by-minute breakdown, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.
As the Haryana Assembly Election results unfolded, the BJP appeared poised to secure its third consecutive term in power. However, the Congress questioned the integrity of the process, accusing the ECI of deliberately slowing down the results update. In light of these claims, the Election Commission was quick to address the concerns raised by Congress.
ECI’s responds to Congress’ allegations
In response to Jairam Ramesh’s allegations, the ECI clarified that similar accusations were made by the Congress during the Lok Sabha election results on June 4, 2024. At that time, the Commission also found these claims to be baseless and refuted them. According to the ECI, the counting of votes is conducted at pre-designated centers, as per Rule 60 of the Conduct of Election Rules, with officials nominated by the Commission monitoring the process closely.
The Commission emphasized that there was no delay or manipulation, providing detailed records to prove that the results were updated in real time.
Congress’ accusation of bias and delay
Jairam Ramesh took to social media to voice his concerns, tagging the Election Commission and accusing it of slowing down the release of election trends. He tweeted, “Election trends are being deliberately shared at a slow pace on the Election Commission’s website, raising suspicion that the BJP is trying to influence the administration.”
Ramesh further stated that despite receiving results from 11-12 rounds of counting, only 4-5 rounds were reflected on the ECI’s website. He claimed that a similar issue occurred during the Lok Sabha elections, raising doubts about the impartiality of the Commission.
‘Delay was BJP’s mind game’
Ramesh expressed concern that these delays could affect voter confidence in the election process, stating that the delay was “a mind game” designed to disrupt the election outcome. He urged the ECI to ensure transparency and expedite the release of accurate results, to maintain the credibility of both the voting system and the public’s trust.
Despite the accusations by Congress, the Election Commission has firmly rejected the claims of bias and delay, maintaining that the counting process is being conducted fairly and under strict supervision. As the results continue to be updated, the focus remains on ensuring transparency in the electoral process.
